The Laxey Working Mens’ Institute on New Road in Laxey will be welcoming visitors for a festive open day this Saturday, 18th December between 10am and 1pm.
The Institute has been used by the community in the last 2 centuries but had fallen into disrepair and was closed to the public. A group of volunteers has been working for the last 4 years to restore the building so that it can once again be the heart of the community. The aim is for the building to host a wide range of events for all ages, including youth groups, exercise classes, music and theatre. The restoration is nearing completion and the trustees would like to give the public a chance to see what has been achieved.
Those calling in during the open morning will be treated to mince pies, hot food and hot drinks courtesy of the Co-operative. Manx Youth Brass and Manx Concert Brass will provide the carols in aid of their band room fund.
The Trustees would be very pleased to see anyone from Laxey or further afield who would like to see how they will be able to enjoy the facilities in the years to come or just take a peek inside the building.
Chairman of the Trustees, Richard Henthorn, said:
“After more than 4 years of hard work we are ready to let the public see what we have achieved so far. We have raised almost ?200,000 in donations, with over half being given by private individuals. We are all incredibly grateful for this support and would hope that anyone who has contributed will be able to join us on Saturday. Every penny given has been spent on the Institute and the building is now ready to serve the community for many more years. We are now planning for a formal opening early next year and will soon be taking bookings. We set out to make sure that the building was once again able to serve as the heart of our community and are very close indeed to having done what we set out to do.”
