The Children’s Centre Out2Play scheme has recorded its best ever year with more children than ever before attending play sessions during school holidays. A total of 3,700 children took part in this year’s scheme, an increase of 1,200 on 2009. This year’s Out2Play programme was supported with funds provided by Thomas Miller (Isle of Man) Ltd. The company also purchased a minibus which is used by Out2Play staff to organise free play sessions around the Island. The sessions are run by The Children’s Centre play workers supported by volunteers and as well as offering a chance to play and meet new friends, children also learn about the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
Chris Gregory, Playwork Development Officer at The Children’s Centre, said the support from this year’s sponsors had been a big help in expanding the scheme. He said:
“The support from Thomas Miller has had a significant impact on Out2Play, in particular the new minibus has enabled us to reach more children and raise the profile of the scheme. Out2Play has a positive impact on children as it encourages them to play outside, to stay active and healthy and meet new friends.”
This year Out2Play has reached a majority of the Island’s 5,000 primary school children.
Ian Jarrett, Chairman of Thomas Miller (Isle of Man) Ltd, said he was delighted to hear the scheme had been so successful. He said:
“This year’s figures clearly show that the Out2Play scheme continues to grow in popularity thanks to the hard work and dedication of The Children’s Centre staff. We are pleased to see that our funding has helped to develop the scheme and that more and more children are benefitting from it.”
