Thousands of Small Steps for Trekkers, One “Great” Leap for Charity

by isleofman.com 23rd December 2010
In October 2010, 7 intrepid fundraisers set off to Beijing for a week of trekking the Great Wall of China in aid of The Children’s Centre. The trek involved walking up to 7 hours per day along stretches of the historic Great Wall of China. The group not only took in the newly restored sections, but went further afield and discovered stretches of un-restored Wall and the challenges that they presented – climbing along narrow sections of crumbling wall with sheer drops either side. As part of the Trek they were able to help restore a section of the Wall by placing their own bricks. The Trek to China is the fourth overseas trip The Children’s Centre have offered since 2008 and these have raised a total of over ?100,000 for the Charity. Lorna Trevethan of The Children’s Centre said, “The team of 7 (those pictured above, along with Gary Cooper and Liz Geldart) have done a fantastic job in raising money for The Children’s Centre. In total to date they have raised ?12,961.69 which will make a huge difference to the work that the charity does across the island, including the work of the Child Contact Centre.” The Child Contact Centre is a friendly neutral setting where children of separated families can spend time with one or both parents and sometimes other family members. This service is offered completely free to the families who use it. In 2010 it has offered over 300 hours of contact for 252 families across the Isle of Man. If you would like further information about the work that The Children’s Centre does, or would like further information about the adventures we have in store for 2011, please log on to the website, www.thechildrenscentre.org.im or contact the fundraising team on 676076.
