Request For Information

Police in the South of the Island are investigating Criminal Damage to Football nets at two of the Local Football clubs and also at King Williams College over the weekend. Criminal Damage was caused to the goal nets at Colby and Rushen Football Clubs overnight on Friday 7th January and Saturday 8th January 2011. It appears that someone has used a sharp implement to cut a total of 4 nets. The nets were up in the goal posts when they were cut. This criminal damage will cost the clubs up to a ?1000 to replace the nets. There has also been two incidents of damage to the nets reported as having been committed at King Williams College. The first was overnight on Friday 7th January and Saturday 8th January 2011 when two nets were cut in a similar manner to those at Colby and Rushen. The nets at the College were replaced so that matches could continue, only to be damaged again on the evening of Sunday 9th January 2011. On that occasion 4 nets were cut and removed from the posts and thrown over the wall in the area of Hango Hill. Two goal posts were also uprooted and thrown onto the beach. Thankfully the posts were recovered and replaced undamaged. Sgt Rosie Hawes of the Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team has said that officers within the Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently investigating these reports and asks for anybody with any information which may assist to contact Port Erin Police Station on 832222. Offences of this nature do not benefit anyone and are very frustrating and expensive for the clubs concerned, all of whom provide a valuable service to their local communities and rely on the goodwill of their members and supporters to survive financially. The nets in question will cost over ?500.00 each to replace. In relation to the damage and removal of the posts at King Williams College, more than one person would have to have been involved due to the very weight of the posts concerned which were carried over the College wall, across the road and thrown onto the beach. The IOM Football Association have been spoken to by officers and as a result of this damage all football clubs on the Island have been requested to ensure that their nets are taken off the posts when not required and stored securely.
