Captain of the King William’s College 1st XV Rugby team, Guy Wood, has been selected to play for the North England Independent Schools Barbarian team.
Due to a hand injury sustained playing for King William’s College, Guy unfortunately missed the first trial for the North England Squad. However, he was invited to take part in the second trial where he played for the North in a tournament against The Midlands, the South West and the South East. Guy contributed well to the team's performances playing at Outside Centre where he scored several tries and impressed in both attack and defence.
As an invitation only club, the Barbarians organisation was set up to discover talented players who have yet to be identified by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) academy structure. It was inspired by the rugby tour and created to allow for regular short tours by highly skilled players. As a new member, Guy will be involved in fixtures during 2011 for the North of England playing a Cambridge University Freshers XV, the Scottish Exiles and the Combined British Schools of Europe.
Guy is looking forward to the new challenge: “Although apprehensive before the trial in Birmingham, I felt that I gave a good representation of myself as a player and of King William's College rugby. I thought the experience of playing rugby at a higher level than I am used to was fantastic and I really enjoyed the entire event. I am very pleased to be included in the Northern Squad and look forward to playing for them in the next couple of months.”
King William’s College coach Mike Hebden commented: “Guy has shown outstanding commitment to KWC rugby all through his time at College and really does deserve the chance to shine at a higher level. This will also be great preparation for Guy when he leads the KWC 1st XV during their tour of Canada this summer.”
