The start of the Manx Youth Games (MYG) in 2002 coincided with the renaissance of Junior Squash on the Isle of Man.
In the 1990s, there was very little in the way of organised Junior Development activity for those children interested in having a go at Squash or those who had tried it, liked it and wanted to improve their skills. This all began to change in 2001 with the appointment of Gary Crease as the Isle of Man Squash Racket Association's (IOMSRA) Junior Development Officer.
Gary started to organise beginners and improvers sessions at the NSC on Saturdays while Les Callow, now IOMSRA President, provided an alternative on Sundays at the now sadly demised Onchan Squash Club. Gary and Les were supported by a small but very dedicated number of coaches, in particular Irene Taggart, who later succeeded Les as MYG Co-ordinator, Steve Clark and Dave Griffiths, the current MYG co-ordinator. Once MYG started, they were joined by John Watterson who held sessions in the South at King Williams College, courts which again are now sadly unusable. There was also the enthusiastic, amiable and extremely reliable Mark Freeman who tragically is no longer with us.
The MYG sessions are the first step on the Player Pathway developed by Gary Crease which shows children how they can get from where there are through IoM competitions to County and potentially up to National and International level. We haven't got there yet but we have had 2 county champions: Robin Crease in 2006 and Hannah Dixon (pictured) this year as well as a number of other players representing Merseyside in inter-county fixtures.
