The Children’s Centre Is Sixth In Sunday Times Best Charities To Work For List

by isleofman.com 2nd March 2011
The Children’s Centre was ranked ahead of some of the most well known UK charities in this year’s The Sunday Times 100 Best Places To Work In The Public And Charity Sectors list. The charity, which has its headquarters on Woodbourne Road in Douglas, is sixth in the list which will be published in full in The Sunday Times on March 13. This is the second year The Children’s Centre has been included in The Sunday Times lists, in 2010 it was ranked 83rd in the 100 Best Small Companies To Work For. John Knight, Chief Executive of The Children’s Centre, said: “To have achieved sixth place in this new category is a truly amazing result and we are delighted that our team members continue to recognise The Children’s Centre as a ‘Best Place to Work’. We are thrilled to once again receive national recognition, and to represent the Isle of Man alongside Manx Telecom and Fairbairn Private Bank, in the prestigious Sunday Times awards.” Last week Fairbairn Private Bank was ranked 17th in The Sunday Times Best Small Companies To Work For list, and Manx Telecom was listed at 88th, this week, in The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For list published on March 6. The Sunday Times sponsored survey is the largest employee survey of its kind with over 1,165 organisations involved and 275,000 employees completing the survey this year. The survey focuses on workplace engagement and aims to show the level to which employees feel personally involved with their organisation. The top 10 placing for The Children’s Centre in the Sunday Times list comes a few weeks after the charity achieved an ‘Outstanding’ two star award in the Best Companies rating system for the second year running. Best Companies Ltd is the company behind The Sunday Times Best Companies To Work For lists and its star status awards are based on the same employee survey. The Children’s Centre develops, manages, and pioneers a variety of community initiatives and services aimed at enabling children, young people, and families to realise their full potential. It is an independent Manx charity – undertaking its own projects and working with others – to put children, young people, and families first. The Children’s Centre is the Isle of Man’s leading children’s charity and works directly with over 1,000 children, young people and families each week. It runs vital services across the Island including play groups, nursery care and after school clubs. The charity can trace its history back to 1868 when founder Henry Bloom Noble recognised that there were a large number of destitute children living in Douglas. These children lacked housing, food, clothing and education, and it was realised that there was an urgent need to provide for their needs. While the location of the charity has changed on many occasions, it remained a children’s home for over a century. In the 1980s The Isle of Man Children’s Centre was created and provided a wide range of services for children, families and young people. The charity became The Children’s Centre in 2009. - ENDS -
