Manx Telecom is pleased to announce the first successful migration of fixed line customers to its Next Generation Network (NGN). This is part of the ?25 million NGN programme to replace the entire fixed, mobile and broadband network with an IP (Internet Protocol) telecommunications system which will converge voice calls, data, television, and video, onto one network. In total this will mean ‘migrating’ more than 55,000 fixed lines to the new network - the first phase began before Christmas in the Laxey area. Thanks to the hard work of Manx Telecom’s NGN Project Team this first phase has been completed and more than 1,700 customers are now on NGN.
Manx Telecom has written to every customer in the Laxey area giving them more information about NGN and confirming the changeover for their address and this will continue across the Island as each customer’s landline is migrated to NGN. Public notices will also be published in the local press prior to work commencing in other areas of the Island.
Jason Moffatt, NGN Migration Manager, said:
“To have started and completed Laxey Exchange has been a major milestone for the migration team, the NGN program and for Manx Telecom. The first day of migration coincided with the first significant snowfall on the Island, however, that did not deter the team even though access to the exchange was best made on foot. Overall, over 600 hours was put in to successfully migrating Laxey, using over 8km of wiring. The team is now looking forward to starting work on the Peel Exchange and completing the rest of Island by the end of the year.”
The next exchange area to be migrated will be Peel which starts on March 10th and is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of April. During the migration phase, work will normally take place between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, with each line being taken out of service for a maximum of 5 minutes within that period. Work on the NGN project across the Island is expected to be completed by the end of this year at which point all fixed line customers will be on the new network.
NGN is one of the largest projects of its kind ever undertaken by Manx Telecom. It is also a project which will have an impact on the work and home life of every Manx resident, and one
that Manx Telecom is confident will benefit the Island’s economy in the years ahead due to the business opportunities it will create.
