Gymnastics - Tony Duchars

by isleofman.com 8th March 2011
Gymnast Tony Duchars got his season off to a great start at The London Open this weekend. Once again the 13 year old stepped up to the mark with a near faultless routine on the pommel to finish in second place, being beaten by only 0.1 of a mark. A new double twist to open his floor routine improved his overall scores but a couple of mistakes on Parallel Bar cost him dearly in the Overall Positions. This year Tony has moved into the Under 14 age category and with this transition the level of gymnastics increases. Tony’s view on this is: “Most of the boys are doing double and twist dismounts from the apparatus which is really tricky. I have my double for Floor, Parallel Bars and Rings but I haven’t got it off High Bar which is a big deduction. My coach is really pleased with my Pommel Routines and I have one of the most difficult routines for my age on this piece of apparatus.” Tony who was awarded a Gubay Chase your Dreams Scholarship last year, has been training at Huntingdon Gymnastics Club since September 2009 with his coach Ben Howells. He would like to say a very big thank you to Isle of Man Sportaid for all of their help and to Mary, Oliver and Family who have helped him achieve his gymnastics dream. Tony is looking forward to next weekend when he will represent the Island at the Celtic Cup in Lisborn, Northern Ireland. Ends
