Two Manx students will be attending the Commonwealth Day observance celebrations in London on March 14.
Laura Jackson, 26, from Greeba and Emma Kiver, 20, from Peel, both studying at Queen Mary College, University of London, have been selected by the Isle of Man branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) to join other young men and women nominated by CPA branches throughout the UK in the celebrations, the theme for which will be Women as Agents of Change.
Miss Jackson and Miss Kiver will be attending presentations led by visiting and UK parliamentarians, followed by the Observance Day service at Westminster Abbey where the Queen, as Head of the Commonwealth, will be joined by all Commonwealth High Commissioners in London. The day will conclude with a reception - also in the presence of Her Majesty - at Marlborough House in Pall Mall, the headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat, hosted by Commonwealth Secretary-General Mr Kamalesh Sharma.
Chairman of the Isle of Man branch of the CPA Clare Christian MLC said: ‘This year’s Commonwealth Day has a heightened focus on young citizens of the Commonwealth. Against this background we are pleased to be able to provide Laura and Emma an opportunity to engage with other young people from around the Commonwealth and gain a deeper understanding of the contribution made by the CPA to parliamentary democracy.’
