The Isle of Man Wind Orchestra is pleased to announce that a grant from the Manx Lottery Trust has enabled it to purchase a new euphonium for use by one of its members.
The grant will also assist the orchestra in the purchase of other instruments where the purchase would not normally be possible due to the high cost.
The announcement of the grant comes at the start of the orchestra’s 2011 season of concerts, with the first one on Saturday 26th March at 7.30pm at All Saints’ Church, Douglas.
Ben Dunlop, long-standing member, will play the euphonium in a concert that will feature the full orchestra performing film and military music, to reflect its twin themes this year.
‘We hope to perform such classics as the themes from the films 633 Squadron, Where Eagles Dare and Nimrod from Enigma Variations as well as some light numbers including Bohemian Rhapsody, made famous by Freddie Mercury and Queen,’ says Paul Dunderdale, Musical Director.
Admission to the concert will be ?5 for adults and ?3 for children, payable at the door, with refreshments available during the interval.
‘Members are looking forward to playing at All Saints’ Church,’ says Michael Morrison, Chairman, ‘as our Christmas concert had to be postponed due to the weather and we missed the warm, welcoming atmosphere we experience in this venue.’
The orchestra has gained charitable status this year, which will assist it in promoting music for wind orchestras, supporting young players and performing at community events.
There are a number of events planned for this year including a Wind and Brass Weekend from 15th to 17th April, which will be led by Phil Robinson from the Kings School in Chester. As usual, this will be open to all musicians playing brass, woodwind and percussion instruments and this year it is being held in the Easter school holidays to encourage as many students as possible to attend.
