The Laxey Wheel Gets A Birthday Makeover

by isleofman.com 1st April 2011
To celebrate Manx National Heritage’s 125th anniversary, staff have treated our famous Laxey Wheel to a wonderful birthday makeover. Manx National Heritage staff have been working hard overnight to surprise locals and paint the masses of white stone which surround the wheel in a more Manx inspired design. The once white stone has been transformed from head to toe in our Manx tartan. Set high on the hillside, overlooking Laxey Village the magnificent Lady Isabella is even more eye-catching with her tartan makeover whose colours each symbolise a different facet of the beautiful Manx landscape. With blue for the sky, purple for the heather, yellow for the gorse, green for the hills and white for the traditional whitewashed crofts, the tartan pattern reaches a massive 22 metres high and can be seen for miles around. I hope that you will agree with all staff at Manx National Heritage that the new brighter Laxey Wheel compliments its natural surroundings wonderfully. So come and see for yourselves, the new Laxey Wheel, you’d be a fool not to! ENDS
