The Spa Suite in the National Sports Centre in Douglas has re-opened after refurbishment.
The Department of Community, Culture and Leisure has provided a new Jacuzzi and redecorated throughout the facility. Additionally, there has been an upgrade of the air conditioning system, furniture, doors and tiles as well as the installation of themed lighting.
Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure is a user whenever time allows of the Fitness Zone and Spa Suite. He explained: ‘I used to go to the old facility at Summerland then five years ago when I lost three stones in weight on a challenge to get fit, I got in the habit of relaxing in the Spa Suite after doing a workout on the various gym equipment. For anyone who enjoys the relaxation a spa offers then this offers inexpensive access for all. I recommend the NSC advance saver ticket, which is what I use – it provides very good value!’
Up to 50,000 people a year use the Fitness Zone, and around half of those also use the Spa Suite, which means since opening over 12 years ago more than 250,000 people have enjoyed the benefits of relaxing in the Spa facilities. The recent redecoration and replacement of equipment in the Spa Suite was achieved for around ?80,000.
Mr Cretney continued: ‘After 12 years of operation, it’s not surprising that the Jacuzzi tub had come to the end of its working life and had to be replaced, and the whole Spa Suite was ready for refurbishment. As part of the investment in this commercial, income-generating business, we have also installed a new and improved filtration system, which has one of the best chemical dosing systems on the market meaning it complies with the most stringent guidelines.
‘Overall I’m delighted with the improvements that have been made, and I hope the NSC’s customers will be too.’
One regular customer who enjoys the Spa’s facilities is Eric Lockett, of St John’s, who said: ‘I come to the gym and spa twice a week. The refurbishment was necessary and it’s a big improvement. The steam room is much better and this is a brilliant Jacuzzi.’
Admission to the Spa Suite costs just ?4 off peak and ?5.30 at peak times, with a resident’s discount card. Further discounts are available through purchasing the five and 10 advance saver tickets. Peak times for the Spa Suite are from 5pm until 9pm Monday to Friday. It opens at 10am daily. There is no membership fee for using any NSC facilities.
