Fifty brave adventurers tackled The Children’s Centre’s Dare To Live challenge which was a Tyrolean traverse across Dhoon Glen near Laxey. The challenge - which involved crossing the 150 foot wide glen on a rope while strapped into a harness - raised more than ?8,500 for the charity.
Experts for The Children’s Centre Mobex team made sure everyone got across safely and gave instructions to each participant before they made the crossing on Saturday (April 2). The Tyrolean traverse is used in many mountain regions to cross valleys where there are no bridges. It is similar to a ‘zip wire’ rope descent but with the starting and finishing points at the same height.
Mark Eastham, Fundraising Co-ordinator for The Children’s Centre, said:
“It really was a fantastic day and the sun shone from start to finish. I’d like to thank everyone who took part not only for completing the challenge but also for raising vital funds for the charity. We’ve managed to raise over ?8,500 so far with more money still expected to come in. All the money raised will be used to support our Mobex Project. I’d also like to thank Tony Couper-Woods for giving us permission to use his land and also to Stewart Carter from Climb 365 for his technical assistance on the day.”
Zoe Lowey from Douglas completed The Children’s Centre Dare To Live Challenge on Saturday morning and then set off to take part in a charity abseil in the afternoon. Chris Martin, Facilities Manager at The Children’s Centre, turned up dressed as Evel Knievel and true to his adopted persona he completed the challenge without any sign of nerves.
Jo Whiteman summed up the emotions of many of the participants after completing the challenge. She said:
“It was a brilliant experience. I panicked a little at the start but it was really good. I’ve not done anything like this before but I would definitely do it again.”
