A new online messaging service is being introduced to support members of the All Island Pubwatch scheme in their drive to promote responsible drinking and combat unruly behaviour on licensed premises.
The service, which utilises Manx Telecom’s existing Online SMS service, allows text messages to be sent in bulk by landlords and designated officials who have access to the internet. It is being provided free of charge by Manx Telecom for the first 12 months.
The aim is to provide fast and reliable communication between Pubwatch members so that important information can be shared as effectively as possible.
For example, those signed up to the service can send online SMS messages to report an incident, draw attention to issues of concern or highlight potential troublemakers to other licensees.
It is the latest initiative to be implemented by the All Island Pubwatch scheme to help ensure that local pubs and clubs continue to offer a safe environment for customers.
All Island Pubwatch Incident Manager Karen Atkinson said: ‘The vast majority of people in the Island drink sensibly and enjoy a good night out without spoiling anybody else’s fun. However, we will continue to deal robustly with the minority who are intent on causing trouble, and this new messaging service will allow members to join forces and communicate quickly in the event of any issues arising.’
Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw welcomed the initiative, saying: ‘This is another excellent example of the Government, Isle of Man Constabulary, licensing trade and private sector working together to achieve positive results.’
Bill Malarkey MHK, Department Member with responsibility for the Drug and Alcohol Strategy, added: ‘The Pubwatch scheme deserves a great deal of credit for contributing to a reduction in alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour, which in turn supports our efforts to keep the Island a safe place to live, work and socialise.’
All Island Pubwatch has adopted a pro-active approach on a range of issues – such as binge drinking, drug crime and proof of age identification – in order to address socially unacceptable behaviour. In the most serious cases it has the power to ban offenders from all licensed premises in the Isle of Man.
Online messaging will complement those existing campaigns and Manx Telecom’s Managing Director Mike Dee said the company was pleased to offer its support.
He said: ‘Fast communication is essential to maximise the effectiveness of the Pubwatch scheme. The online SMS service is simple to use and will enable messages to be relayed to members as soon as incidents are reported.’
