The new Tynwald gift shop and exhibition space in the Legislative Buildings have been officially opened by the President of Tynwald Hon Noel Cringle MLC OBE.
In his welcome address the President said that the late Sir Charles Kerruish, former President of Tynwald, had long wished that a shop be installed in the Legislative Buildings on Prospect Hill and he expressed his delight that Sir Charles’ vision had now been realised at the Finch Road site.
The President was joined at the opening by a number of MHKs, MLCs and Tynwald officers, together with five year six pupils from Scoill Ree Gorree, whom he praised for their creative artwork of Archibald Knox-themed Manx crosses, which had become the first display to feature in the new exhibition space. In closing the President said he believed the new facility would amply complement the tours of Tynwald and provide an opportunity for visitors to purchase a keepsake of their visit.
Free tours of Tynwald, lasting about an hour, are offered on Mondays at 2pm and Fridays at 10am weekly, excluding public holidays. Groups may request pre-booked tours at other times, including evenings and weekends. For more information telephone 685580 or email: library@tynwald.org.im
Located in the Tynwald Library on the ground floor of the Legislative Buildings, the shop, open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, carries a selection of gifts and souvenirs, many unique to Tynwald, along with a range of Manx-themed items.
The adjacent exhibition space has been provided to accommodate Manx-themed displays by schools, youth, community and sporting organisations, private individuals or commercial enterprises seeking a secure easily managed area. There will be no rental charge, only a small commission fee for sales by commercial operators.
