Reach for the Skies - Young Persons Flying Scholarship

by isleofman.com 11th April 2011
“Reach for the Skies”, now a reality for two lucky individuals The Association of Manx Pilots in Conjunction with Swift Instruction launch their first Young Persons Flying Scholarship. The search to find two young people to embark upon the first Association of Manx Pilots Young Persons Flying Scholarship is now complete. In February, prospective candidates were invited to submit written applications; subsequently a number of candidates were selected for interviews which took place before the final selection was made. Paul Adamson (AMP) commented “The Scholarship is something we have been planning for some time. We weren’t sure what the results would be when we launched the scheme; however, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of all the applicants which made the final selection extremely tough”. We are very pleased to announce the scholars are James Whitelegg & Jeffrey Williams. James & Jeffrey will now embark upon on a journey of self discovery and see the island from a prospective they have never seen before. They will be formally presented with their Pilots Log Books by the Minister of Education and Children, Mr. Eddie Teare, on Saturday 9th April at Andreas Airfield Each candidate will now complete ten Civil Aviation Authority approved National Private Pilots Licence (M) flying lessons, attend theory based ground school lessons throughout the summer and autumn and receive various document resources. With real application and effort from the scholars they could complete the scholarship within sight of their first solo flight. Tony Tomlins, Chief Flight Instructor from Swift Instruction said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for James & Jeffrey. We were looking for individuals who could fully commit to the program and through the selection process they have demonstrated enthusiasm and desire. The Scholarship is not “Pilot School”, it is a personal development opportunity that will challenge them and push the barriers of their comfort zone; however, they will be rewarded with experiences unlike anything they have done before.” The Scholarship is based at Andreas Airfield, the home of the Association of Manx Pilots. It is our intention to roll out the selection process “island wide” next year through High Schools and Youth Groups. To maintain the program the Association would be interested to discuss part or whole funding for the scholarship in 2012 with any potential private or corporate sponsors.
