Prepare for a family weekend of medieval mayhem and mischief as Castle Rushen is brought to life by Manx National Heritage as they join forces with Conquest, the UK’s premier medieval re-enactment society.
A troupe of re-enactors from the top group, Conquest (www.angevin.org), assisted by local friends, will be invading the inside grounds of Castle Rushen on 21st and 22nd May. They will be living in a tented encampment transporting the Castle and its visitor’s way back to the 1200s.
Indulge all of your senses in a medieval atmosphere, as you see, touch and smell some of the things that you might expect to see in a 13th Century Castle Garrison. Watch knights engage in live steel combat in the camps arena and talk to living history experts about the skills needed to make it as a medieval knight. You’ll even be able to look at and handle authentic medieval arms and armour or squirm at the medieval surgeon as he tends to the knight’s ailments or injuries. Think yourself lucky for the modern surgery of today as you watch him at work and talk to him about his surgical tools.
Famished after all the action? Watch the cooks preparing the evening feast in the field kitchen. They will happily share their medieval recipes and educate you on food and nutrition 13th Century style. With all those hungry soldiers to feed you won’t be able to get your hands on the leftovers of the evening feast, but there will be a hog roast in the grounds waiting for you to devour.
And for the fashion-conscious, there will be displays of costume making and style advice should you need some medieval fashion tips. Also see an authentic 13th Century siege engine and beware of being enticed into a “harmless” game of medieval merrills, you might find yourself on the surgeon’s table!
Event open from 10am -5pm, both days. Tickets are priced at ?10 per adult, ?5 per child, now available from www.manxheritageshop.com, The Manx Museum Heritage Shop, Castle Rushen and The Old Grammar School. This is a medieval invasion you won’t want to miss!
