Trident Trust Island Open - Finals held at the NSC – Friday 15th April In a repeat of last year’s Trident Trust Island Open, Dave Norman beat Malcolm Levy by the same 3-1 score-line. Norman built up a commanding lead in the first but Levy did well to peg him back and come within a point. Norman edged away again and Levy saved three game points before eventually succumbing 9/11. In the second Levy played an excellent series of drop shots to bring him to within match point with his opponent hardly off the mark. Norman came back well to get within three points before Levy got the deciding point to win the game 11/7. The third game started at a furious pace with both players showing excellent retrieving and court movement. Levy continued to try for the drop shots but they started to go the wrong side of the line enabling Norman to take the game 11/5. In the fourth game both players continued to put in maximum effort and the crowded gallery was treated to an excellent display of quality squash. There was never more than two points between them throughout the game with Norman just having the edge when it mattered to win the game 11/9 and retain the Trident Trust Island Open title for the sixth consecutive year. The highest placed ladies prize went to Laura Smith while the plate prize, for winning all his matches after the first day, went to Mason McLarney. The first round losers went into a play-off to decide the make-up of two groups of five to compete in a round robin. This was to decide the placing from 33-42 with Daniel Gibson coming out on top of Group A (33rd place) and Joe Witchell heading Group B (38th place). The Brian Cannell Trophy, for the player judged by the organisers and award sponsor to have made the most significant contribution to the competition by way of performance, attitude and commitment, went to Lawrence Rea.
