The next film to be shown at the Centenary Centre in Peel is The Social Network (cert 12A), on Wednesday 27th April. Directed by BAFTA 2011 winner, David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Se7en (1995), Fight Club (1999)) this movie tells the story of the founding of Facebook, the social network site that has more than half a billion users. Its founder, Mark Zuckerburg, is played brilliantly by Jesse Eisenberg.
In 2003, Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard University and nerdish computer programmer, started to develop the idea of a social network for students. Six years and 500 million friends later Mark Zuckerberg became the youngest billionaire in history. However, his success did not come without a price and this film tells the story of the legal and personal complications he has had to deal with. Even if you are not a Facebook user or have no interest in social media you will find this film has universal themes of friendship, ambition and betrayal. Not without controversy, the release of this Oscar winning film attracted both praise and criticism. Zuckerberg himself called it a work of fiction and the legal wranglings over Facebook continue today. Your only chance to see it on the big screen on the Isle of Man!
The film starts at 7:45pm and lasts 121 minutes. Doors open at 7:15pm. Tickets are ?4 (?3 concessions), available from Celtic Gold or on the door. Special blue tickets which guarantee a seat but still require payment on the door can be found at Mostly Manx in Douglas, Shakti Man in Ramsey and Thompson Travel in Port Erin.
The remaining films this season are Made in Dagenham (cert 15) on 11th May and The King's Speech (cert 12A) on 25th May.
