‘Marathon Man’ Charlie Swaps Computer Training for Trainers

by isleofman.com 18th April 2011
A 67-year-old from Port Erin is entering the Half Manx Mountain marathon to raise money for Age Concern Isle of Man. Charlie Quirk, who lives in Close Corneil, decided to support the charity after he gained computer skills by attending Age Concern’s Lifelong Learning Centre at New Southlands. Mr Quirk, who completed four consecutive London marathons between 1989 and 1992, was a keen footballer then took up running aged 45. He has taken part in a number of Island race walks and entered the Half Manx Mountain marathon for the first time last year. He said: ‘Before I started going to the centre at Southlands about a year ago I had no idea how to use a computer. Now I have a laptop and use it all the time, keeping in touch with friends and family. Learning how to use a computer has made a big difference to me, which is why I’ve chosen to enter the Half Mountain marathon and raise funds for Age Concern.’ The Half Manx Mountain marathon takes place on Saturday April 23. Mr Quirk has already received pledges of around ?500. Sponsorship forms are available at Age Concern Isle of Man, 19 Drinkwater Street, Douglas, IM1 1AT. Telephone 613044. Ends
