Last weekend the 27th Student Festival of Sport was attended by 108 visiting archers from five different universities. Mr Geoff Corkish MHK greeted the students and organisers at a reception held at the Chesterhouse Hotel on Friday evening and said how pleased he was to welcome so many archers back to the Island, many of whom have been returning to the Festival for several years. He presented a gift to Katherine Rial of team Prism to mark the occasion of her 10th visit to the Festival, and several other students received mementos following their fifth visit. A special mention was made of the visit of Ian and Sally Pilkington of team Prism, who became engaged at the Festival some years ago, subsequently married, and now reside in Munich, and who travelled especially to the Island to take part in the shooting.
Competitions were held at the NSC, providing quite a spectacle in the main sports hall, and at Ronaldsway, and several new records were set during the weekend. The coveted prize of the team trophy has been won by Oxford for the past two years. However, this year PRISM (which is an alumni group and whose name is an acronym of Perpetually Returning to the Isle of Man) scored 4121 and took the honours and the IOM Archery Club Cup, with Loughborough runners up on 4081 and Oxford in third place with a score of 3889.
Local archer, Alex Snell, competed on Saturday as he is a student at John Moores University, and he was invited to be part of Liverpool University for the team scores. Alex shot very well indeed and finished in overall 3rd place in the individual Gents Recurve competition.
The Isle of Man Archery Club would like to thank Mr Geoff Corkish MHK, Mr Mike Dougherty and Mr Geoff Corlett for their time on Friday evening. Thanks also to Budgetmann Tours, the staff at the NSC, the staff at Ronaldsway Sports and Social Club and in particular to all Club members who gave up their weekend to help run the event. Special thanks to the Island’s new Under 21 Sportswoman of the Year, Aalin George, who acted as Lady Paramount for the weekend and presented the awards on Sunday evening.
This weekend the IOM Archery Club will hold an Easter Egg Double Fita Clout shoot at Ronaldsway – meet at 9.30 for a 10 am start. The first clout will finish around mid-day, with the second clout starting at 12.30 and finishing about 2.30 pm – there will be short distances suitable
