Friends of the Earth IoM - 'Gasland’

by isleofman.com 19th April 2011
Gasland Friends of the Earth IoM are hosting a free screening of the award winning film ‘Gasland’ this Friday, 22nd April, at Java Lounge, Duke St. The film is a cautionary tale about the irreparable damage our thirst for cheap energy is doing to the land and the communities on it, inspired by the recent movement by energy companies in the United States to extract domestic natural gas reserves with a controversial new drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing. Gasland follows filmmaker Josh Fox, an American landowner who is asked to lease his land for drilling, and decides to investigate. Josh sets off on a journey across the country to see what impact the drilling has had in other places and finds a catalogue of absurd and astonishing stories, surrounded by secrets, lies and contamination. Thanks to the One World Centre for helping to coordinate the event and also the sponsors, the Manx Cooperative. Doors will open at 7:30pm and the film will start at 8pm. Ends
