Exclusive Manx Telecom Competition Gives Rally Fan a Day to Remember

by isleofman.com 16th May 2011
Avid motorsports fan Patrick Herring had the best view of the action at this year’s Manx Telecom Rally - from the co-driver’s seat on a closed road run through the first stage. Patrick, who lives in Douglas, won a text message competition run exclusively for Manx Telecom customers. The prize was a ‘money can’t buy’ experience to be a passenger in a rally car driven by former Isle of Man Rally Champion, Ian Corkill. Ian took Patrick on a thrilling race-speed run through the opening stage of last weekend’s rally. Sitting in the co-driver’s seat of Ian’s MKII Ford Escort, Patrick experienced what it’s like to race on closed roads on the 1.5mile run from Port Erin to Cregneash. Patrick, who does not drive, said the experience was exhilarating but a little scary at times. He said: “It was a wonderful experience. Ian is obviously an extremely talented driver, I don’t know how he makes the car do what it does. It was a bit scary going past buildings at racing speed and a little nerve-racking. My eyes nearly popped out of my head a couple of times!” Patrick said the experience had increased his respect for the skill and courage of motorsport competitors. Voirrey Barron, Manx Telecom’s Marketing Communications Manager, said she was pleased that Patrick had enjoyed his prize and added that it was an example of the exclusive offers available to Manx Telecom customers via text promotions.
