The deadline for a media-based competition aimed at students aged 11 to 25 to mark the centenary of the World Manx Association has been extended until June 18.
The Manx in the Media competition, kindly sponsored by Manx Telecom, is part of the Association’s week-long series of events to mark the centenary, which will be based around this year’s Tynwald Day. The WMA was founded in 1911 by Richard Cain.
For the competition, students can use any form of media for their entry – be it written, video or audio.
World Manx President Peter Kelly explained: ‘The deadline was originally the end of April, but we have been able to extend it. The plan was to publish a centenary booklet in time for Tynwald Day, looking at the history of the World Manx, and the idea was to use the booklet to promote the winning competition entries. However, the booklet will now be published later this year, so that we can include stories and pictures from the centenary celebrations. Because of this, we can extend the competition deadline until June 18, which will give us time to judge and announce the winners during the centenary celebrations.
Mr Kelly said: ‘The idea is for each Manx in the Media project to focus on any aspect of Manx life, history, language or culture – students just need to choose their subject and which type of media they want to use.
‘They may want to write an article, start a blog, make a short film, or record an audio piece for radio. The choice is up to them, and there is no restriction on length.’
Example subjects:
• A person, a mentor, someone in history, or a relative that has inspired you, who you think deserves recognition
• A strong feeling or emotion about being Manx or about the Island
• A place on the Island, or indeed the Island as a whole
• An inspiring piece of Manx music
•A Manx blog, website or media outlet which strives to promote the Island positively
The competition is split into two categories - ages 11-16 and 17-25 - and there will be two prizes in each: 1st - ?150; 2nd - ?75
Submissions should be sent to the World Manx Association by midnight on Saturday, June 18 - either by email to worldmanxassociation@manx.net or by post to Manx in the Media, 62 Ballacriy Park, Colby, IM9 4LX.
Events to mark the WMA’s centenary get underway on Friday, July 1 with a reception for Homecomers and World Manx members. The following night sees the Association’s annual dinner, held at the Sefton Hotel, which it’s hoped will include a video link-up with some of the Manx societies around the globe. This event will also be supported by Manx Telecom.
A Homecomers’ church service will be held in a marquee at the Nunnery on Sunday, July 3, and the next day there will be a tour of homes and sites around the Island with an historic link to the World Manx Association.
The celebrations will move on to St John’s for Tynwald Day, followed by a centenary concert at the Villa Marina on the evening of Wednesday, July 6, featuring many well-known local musicians, singers and poets.
Thursday, July 7 will see civic tours of Douglas Town Hall and the Tynwald precincts, as well as a tour of the iMuseum in Kingswood Grove, Douglas, before the week draws to a close on the Friday with a farewell reception.
