Twenty-one teams completed the round the Island Race The Sun relay event on Saturday sponsored by Mannmade Group. Teams of up to 10 runners took part with the aim of completing a clockwise lap of the Island’s Raad ny Foillan 98-mile coastal footpath between sunrise and sunset starting and finishing on Peel Promenade. Mark Eastham, Adventure Events Fundraising Co-ordinator for The Children’s Centre, said:
“We would like to thank all the participants involved as well as the sponsor of the event, Mannmade Group, for helping to make this event such a big success”
A team from Northern AC won the scratch and handicap race titles completing the 98-mile route in 12h 43m 11s. At Laxey - the half way point - Microgaming were managing to hold on to their lead over Northern AC, but this was soon to change with Nikki Boyde running for Northern AC putting in a blistering performance completing the 7.6 mile leg between Laxey and Douglas in a time of 58m 35s, which catapulted Northern AC into the lead which they managed to retain until the finish.
The handicap race was based on predicted times supplied by each of the competitors and this information was used to determine start times. The race began with the first wave of runners starting at 5.17am on Peel Promenade for the first leg which was an 11.45 mile run along the coastal path to The Cronk. The other legs were as follows: Leg 2 - The Cronk to Point of Ayre (10.55miles); Leg 3 - Point of Ayre to Maughold (10.48miles); Leg 4 - Maughold to Laxey (8.98miles); Leg 5 - Laxey to Douglas (7.61miles); Leg 6 - Douglas to Port Grenaugh (10.73miles); Leg 7 - Port Grenaugh to Chapel Bay PSM (10.8miles); Leg 8 - Chapel Bay to Port Erin (7.81miles); Leg 9 - Port Erin to Niarbyl (8.31miles); Leg 10 - Niarbyl to Peel (5.61miles).
Mark Eastham, Fundraising Co-ordinator for The Children’s Centre, said the event - now in its fourth year - was a big success and had raised around ?8,000 this year. He thanked all the teams which took part and raised sponsorship which will go to support vulnerable children and young people in the Isle of Man through The Children’s Centre’s Mobex project.
