Ramsey’s lifeboat, the RNLB Ann and James Ritchie, was launched twice yesterday, Sunday, to evacuate injured crew members from vessels at anchor in Ramsey Bay.
The first ‘shout’ came 13:10 when the lifeboat was launched to the assistance of a crew member with an eye injury aboard the tug boat AHTS Viking, support vessel to the heavy lift vessel Svanen. The injured crew member was taken aboard the lifeboat which then proceeded into Ramsey Harbour where an ambulance was waiting to transfer the casualty to Nobles Hospital.
The lifeboat was then re-housed but within minutes its volunteer lifeboat crew were called into action once again. A second call for medical assistance had been received, this time from the heavy lift vessel Svanen. One of its crew members had fallen down a stairway, sustained a head injury and needed urgent medical assistance. Ramsey lifeboat re-launched immediately. Upon arriving alongside the Svanen four of the lifeboat crew, who are all highly trained by the RNLI and qualified in dealing with medical incidents and injuries at sea, went aboard the heavy lifting vessel. The injured crew member was assessed, and stabilised. The casualty was then placed and secured into a stretcher. The casualty and lifeboat crew members were then safely transferred to the waiting lifeboat by means of the Svanen’s crane. The lifeboat then made all haste into Ramsey Harbour and transferred the injured but conscious casualty to an ambulance and immediate transfer to Nobles Hospital.
