by isleofman.com 24th May 2011
The Isle of Man’s Lady Compound Archers travelled to Evesham in Worcestershire at the weekend to take part in Round 1 of the “Archery GB National Series”. The National Series is shot over four rounds across the length and breadth of England, Wales and Scotland, points are awarded for the archer’s final position at each round, with only the archers top 3 scores counting for their final tally. The top 4 archers in each discipline will take part in the “Big Money” Grand Final in Liverpool during September. Evesham - Round 1 was to be a FITA 720 qualification round followed by individual head to head elimination rounds. Custom Built Archery backed Sarah Rigby and Aalin George were joined by youngest member of the George clan Kirsten. Despite the horrendous weather the trio battled on and were disappointed when the organisers elected to reduce the Qualifying Round to only 36 arrows. Sarah seeded 9th, Aalin 15th and Kirsten 24th heading into the elimination rounds. Kirsten was drawn against Welsh Commonwealth Games archer Jan Howells int he 1/16ths, despite winning the first set she lost the match 6-2. Aalin cruised through her 1/16th round in straight sets to set herself up an 1/8th round battle with the number 2 seed GB Paralympian, Pippa Briton. Aalin won 6-2. Setting up a ? final shootout with Christie Westman where she bowed out 6-0. Sarah comfortably won her 1/16th round to find herself facing the “on form” GB Shooter Mary Perrott in the 1/8th round sadly losing out 6-0. The weekend was a tremendous achievement for the girls due to the horrendous weather both at the event and at home in recent weeks leaving them very out of practice!
