The Southern 100 course features on a new stamp issue and an official presentation to club officials was held on Saturday at the Pre-TT Classic Race meeting. Geoff Corkish MBE MHK, Vice Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office, presented Southern 100 Club officials with the stamp image on canvas. The image is part of a comical new set of stamps designed by cartoonist Harold „Dusty? Miller. A further presentation was made to Southern 100 and TT competitors Ryan Farquhar, Klaus Klaffenbock and Dan Sayle. They feature on a different set of stamps „The Centenary of the Mountain Circuit? and it seemed an ideal time to present them with framed sets of the stamps which feature the ten greatest TT races of all time. Dusty Miller was a newspaper cartoonist between 1933 and 1962 and captured political and social issues in a way that text alone could not. Some cartoons would remain topical for generations and the new range of stamps feature six of his best works. Occasionally, Dusty bordered on morale-raising or conscience-pricking propaganda but mostly visualised public sentiment. In 1953 Dusty?s artistry in oils and water colours led to him being founder chairman of the Isle of Man Art Society. His dream of an annual Easter art exhibition was realised in 1963, one year before his death, aged 66. Ten years later, the founder of Isle of Man Post Office and former work colleague, Victor Kneale, would suggest that, had Dusty been alive, he could have designed commercial postage stamps. In fact, he had produced two designs in about 1938 and 1953 when there were public campaigns for them. Commenting after the presentations Derek Nicholson, Southern 100 President said: “It is very pleasing to see this particular Dusty Miller caricature of the Southern 100, which originally appeared in a Manx newspaper in 1955 being released in the special Isle of Man stamp issue.” He added: “It is always an honour to see any of the three road races we run on the Billown Course being represented on the Isle of Man stamps and look forward to being on further issues in the not too distant future.” Dot Tilbury, General Manager Philatelic Bureau, Isle of Man Post Office said: “It was a daunting task to choose six of the best cartoons to use as stamps from the hundreds which Dusty produced. However, we were unanimous in selecting the Southern 100 cartoon as it said everything about Dusty?s ability to capture the humour and the moment when the TT races headed south to Ballabeg! -Ends-
