Celton Manx Sir Norman Wisdom Wooden Spoon Golf Day

A great day was had by all at the Celton Manx Sir Norman Wisdom Wooden Spoon Golf Day last week. A host a famous faces from the worlds of sport and showbusiness gathered at Castletown Golf Links to join local teams. The event was fully subscribed on the day with 18 teams of four competing with a celebrity player in each team. This year Olympians Roger Black and Steve Backley were joined by footballers Andy Ritchie, Duncan McKenzie, Dean Windass and John Hendrie; World Superbike rider Leon Haslam, rugby league star Frank Myler, boxer John H Stracey and from the entertainment world Bernie Flint, Paul McCoy, Danny Roman and Aaron James. Stan Boardman also returned to host the event for the 5th year. The tournament was won by the Blackburn Construction Team which consisted of Andy Gregory, Johnny Palmer, Dave Brown and ex-footballer Andy Ritchie. Runners up were the Haldane Fisher Team which included John Belcher, Andy Campbell, Allyn Lang and World Superbike rider Leon Haslam. There was one big winner on the day though! Lee Worsfold hit a fantastic hole-in-one on the 16th bagging himself a ?20,000 new Mini Countryman from BMW Mini dealership Buchanan. Sales Manager at Buchanan Simon Skillan said: ‘Buchanan has supported the Wooden Spoon Golf Day for a number of years and it is always a great event to be involved with. In all the years we have been involved nobody has ever managed to get a hole-in-one so it was an amazing achievement for Lee.’ An estimated ?10,000 was raised during the day for the Wooden Spoon children’s charity. The day was rounded off with a fabulous gala dinner of the Palace Hotel hosted by Stan Boardman. Executive Director of Celton Manx Bill Mummery said: ‘Celton Manx is delighted to sponsor such a well-loved and attended event as the Sir Norman Wisdom Wooden Spoon Golf Day. We were delighted to be joined at the gala dinner by Sir Norman’s son Nick and daughter-in-law Kim who were fantastic company. ‘The Wooden Spoon is a fabulous charity which provides support for local children’s projects and we are proud to be associated with it.’ ENDS
