The Isle of Man Youth Arts Centre is forming a performance group to create a rhythmic percussion ensemble, which will emulate the style of world famous Brighton troupe Stomp. Using physical theatre, comedy and mime together with a startling array of household and industrial items the group will be making music with dustpans, rusty metal signs, ladders, folding chairs, boxes of kitchen matches, paper bags, garbage cans, oil drums and yes, maybe even the kitchen sink.
Leader Alex Turner said: ‘After seeing similar groups in the UK, I was captivated by their energy and performance levels and have been working on creating rhythms using everything from the human body to oil drum’s, shopping trolleys, dustbin lids and various other hittable stomping objects which make a very good noise.’
The sessions will start on Thursday June 16th at 7.30 pm at the Youth Arts Centre, Kensington Road, Douglas, for potential Stompers aged 14 and over who want to make music from everything. Sessions cost ?1.00 and last 90 minutes.
Fiona Helleur, Head of Youth Arts at the YAC, said: ‘We are very excited about this project, and delighted that Alex is joining us to present this highly energetic and fun performance art. I hesitate to call it dance or theatre, even calling it music is questionable, but it is incredible to watch and even more fun to do and we are looking forward old rubbish being brought into the centre to create a startling piece of theatre that will bring an exciting and original performance art to the island.’
