Heather McKenna Wins the 1st Leg of the KHG Senior Open

The opening round of the KHG Funds Senior Open at Castletown Golf Club on 27th May, sponsored by Cowley Groves Estate Agents, started with 83 competitors tackling the course in blustery and cold conditions. The early competitors had the better of the weather and the course was showing its teeth as the best score in was 37 points by John Fenlon. John led all day until the last group went out and and Heather McKenna scored a credible 41 points in blustery conditions. Heather started well with a gross birdie on the third for 4 points, net birdies on seven and nine for 22 points out, two further net birdies on ten and eleven and the only drop shot of the round on sixteen, coming back in 19 with a total of 41 points. One of Heather’s highlights of the round was a nearest the pin on the short 13th, but unfortunately she missed the birdie putt. John Fenlon scored on every hole and carded 37 points, whilst Gareth Jones lost on the back nine for 3rd place to Seamus Nugent who completed the final 9 holes in 19 points to take 3rd place on 35 points. Cowley Groves were the day sponsors for the Castletown leg and provided the excellent prizes. David Creane stated ”it’s a pleasure to be involved in such a great event, everyone enjoyed the day and hospitality laid on by the KHG staff” The spot prizes were nearest the pin on 13th and 16th hole, sponsored by SMP Partners and Nationwide International respectively. Heather McKenna won the 13th and Paddy Whelan got nearest on the 16th with a superb iron shot. The series is staged over three rounds on May 27, June 30 (Ramsey GC) and August 5 (Peel GC), Stableford format. . The total prize fund value is in excess of ?3,000 and the prize presentation for each day and overall will be held on the final day at Peel Golf Club along with a complimentary buffet. Due to a number of enquiries as to whether entries would be allowed in for the Ramsey and Peel leg of the competition, you will be pleased to know the answer is yes! These entrants will not be eligible for the overall prize for the 3 events.
