In the Fast Lane - Local Youngsters gear up for the World's Biggest Pro-Karting Event

by isleofman.com 6th June 2011
The 3 Legs Racing Team travelled to the UK, with support from the Steam Packet Company, over the May Bank Holiday weekend to take part in their second race, and final training weekend before their entry in the Le Mans 24 Hour Pro Karting Race in July this year. After two days practice out on the Teesside course, the team split into two groups of four to take on a 6 hour endurance race. 39 teams from across the UK took part in the event and the 3 Legs Racing claimed an incredible 3rd and 4th position in their class of Corporate Hire Karts. Over the weekend, the team were also presented with brand new racing helmets from their sponsor, Bob Pope of Teesside Karting. The helmets were used for racing over the weekend, and will also form a vital part of their kit for participation in the forthcoming Le Mans challenge. 3 Legs Racing is a team of young racers which was formed following a collaboration between The Children’s Centre and Team Dazzle – an Isle of Man-based team of pro-kart racers. The aim of the racing challenge was to bring together a group of young people from across the Island who needed a catalyst to bring about real change in their lives. A team of nine young men aged 16 to 21 - Joe Callister, Adam Clarke, Will Griffin, Nathaniel Harper, Michael Hodgeson, Sam Lewin, Chris Mealin, Warren Spencer and Danny Sutton - were selected to take part in six months of training and race preparation under the guidance of Team Dazzle experts. They were all novices in kart racing when the project began in January, but they are now just one month away from representing the Isle of Man in the 2011 Le Mans 24 hour pro-karting race – the world’s biggest pro-karting event. The programme has helped team members to build self-confidence, develop life skills, and taught them to work as part of a team. Carl Faragher, acting head of outreach services at The Children’s Centre said, “The group had a fantastic weekend and their finishing positions should put them in great stead for next month’s entry at Le Mans. As always, it’s the work that goes on behind the scenes in preparation for major events that is the key factor to success and, on behalf of 3 Legs Racing, I’d like to thank the IOM Kart Racing Association for their on-going support and the use of their facilities for training in Jurby.” Ends
