Warning Issued by Peel RNLI

by isleofman.com 6th June 2011
Following a late night rescue Peel RNLI have issued a warning to boat owners to be properly prepared. Peel lifeboat was launched late on Friday evening to rescue a small open boat which had run out of fuel in the Glen Maye area having spent the day around the Calf of Man. The boat from Peel on the Isle of Man with two people on board not only ran out of fuel but had little safety gear on board and no VHF radio in case of emergency. The only means of contact was via mobile phone which was almost useless as the area of the rescue was a notorious black spot for phone signal. The boat was in danger of running ashore on a very treacherous part off the West coast of the Island when the Peel lifeboat with its volunteer crew reached them at about 11 30pm. the original position as reported to the coastguard being some two miles astray from the actual position of the vessel. An RNLI spokesman said it was imperative for all vessels going to sea to be fully equipped with plenty of fuel for the journey, lifejackets and a VHF radio as an absolute minimum. This rescue could so easily have ended in a tragedy.
