Regeneration Project Provides New Focal Point for Nature Conservation

by isleofman.com 14th June 2011
A former derelict building in Peel is set to become a new focal point for wildlife and nature conservation in the Isle of Man. This Saturday (June 18th) marks the opening of the Manx Wildlife Trust shop in Market Place, thanks to a partnership between the registered charity, Peel Regeneration Committee and the Department of Infrastructure. The transformation of the site, which has been supported by a grant of ?30,275 from the Isle of Man Town and Village Regeneration Scheme and ?16,030 from the Historic Building Conservation Scheme, is part of an overall strategy to enhance the local community. Other regeneration proposals in Peel will focus on linking the quayside and promenade with Michael Street, and improving Market Place in order to maximise the potential of the town’s commercial areas. Chairman of the Peel Regeneration Committee Tim Crookall MHK said: ‘This is an important step forward in terms of breathing fresh life into the town and shows what can be achieved when different organisations work together. I’m delighted to see the Manx Wildlife Trust move into Peel and wish them every success for the future.’ Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK added: ‘This regeneration project has given a new lease of life to a prominent and historic building, and I hope it will be well received by the general public. The support provided through the Historic Building Conservation Scheme has helped to preserve the architectural heritage of the building.’ The building will act as the new headquarters, shop and information centre for the Manx Wildlife Trust which is recognised as one of the Isle of Man’s leading nature conservation charities. Director Duncan Bridges said: ‘This has been a major project for our charity and the financial support we received through the Regeneration Scheme and Historic Building Conservation Scheme, along with the many other donors and sponsors, has been a key part in the final success of the whole programme of works.’ The Peel project is a reflection of the collaborative work being undertaken by Government, local authorities, private enterprise and voluntary groups to benefit communities throughout the Island. Funding of ?8 million has been earmarked for the Isle of Man Town and Village Regeneration Scheme, and progress is currently being made on a number of regional proposals. Regeneration Manager Linda McCauley said: ‘The Isle of Man Government is working in partnership with Commissioners, the business community and voluntary sector to support improvements to our towns and villages. The revitalisation of these areas will have spin-offs which help local economies. We have several projects, large and small, at various stages of completion, and other applications in the pipeline. ‘The Manx Wildlife Trust shop is another positive example of how local people are getting involved to directly influence what happens in their communities.’ Ends
