Dignity In Dying Public Meeting

by isleofman.com 15th June 2011
Dignity in Dying to hold public meeting next week in the Isle of Man on assisted dying We will also be addressing Tynwald, as well as our members and supporters Dignity in Dying Chief Executive, Sarah Wootton, will be talking at a public meeting on Wednesday 22nd June at the Manx Legion Club. Sarah will be arguing that a change in the law to allow the choice of assisted dying to terminally ill mentally competent adults would better protect the people of the Isle of Man than the current law does. Sarah will also be speaking to Members of the House of Keys, and at a closed meeting to members and supporters. Sarah Wootton said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to debate the issues on the Isle of Man. Dignity in Dying has many supporters in the Isle of Man, and we in turn will offer our support to a Private Members Bill which would allow the choice of assisted dying to terminally ill, mentally competent adults, should a Member of the House of Keys choose to bring one in the new Parliament. “There will be people with understandable concerns about changing the law, and I do hope they too will come to the meeting so that I and my colleagues can discuss those concerns. “Too many people are suffering unbearably and against their wishes at the end of their lives, and the Isle of Man, which has a history of introducing progressive social legislation, could lead the way with a compassionate law to address this.” Ends
