Isle of Man Friends of the Earth continues to highlight the importance of reducing our need for fossil fuels like oil & gas by showing another thought provoking film called The Pipe.
Following on from the last successful film show about the destructiveness of drilling for shale gas which was called Gaslands this latest film will be shown Friday 17th night, doors open 7.30 for 8pm start.
Big energy corporations normally get what they want. When Shell discovered an undersea natural gas field off Ireland’s west coast, they swung into action. The plan was to build a giant, high-pressure pipe to transport raw gas through the town of Rossport to an inland refinery. Unfortunately, no one asked the residents of Rossport, who feared the risks of explosions and environmental hazards. In The Pipe, director Risteard O Domhnaill chronicles the crusade of Irish farmers and fishermen who rise up against Shell. For locals, the pipe isn’t a sign of prosperity, but a threat to their way of life.
Many of the country scenes could be parts of the IoM and it makes you wonder what would happen if oil or gas was found off our shores!?
'In the past year, “Big Energy” has fought hard against documentarians. Industry advocates mounted a public relations attack on Gasland, and Chevron applied legal pressure on the filmmaker of Crude. The Pipe reminds us again how a multinational corporation can deploy vast resources to battle dissenters’.
IoM FoE is campaigning for our energy/electricity to come from Renewables like Wind, Wave or Solar power which is far less destructive than the mining/drilling and processing for fossil fuels AND Renewables don’t produce carbon dioxide, so contributing to worsening Climate Change – see www.FoE.org.im for more info.
