Manx Sport and Recreation, in conjunction with the Island’s Special Educational Needs Units (SEN Units), is facilitating Athletic School Sport Days this month for all pupils with learning and/or physical disabilities in both primary and secondary schools.
After the success from last year’s secondary school sports morning with over 40 children participating, the Sports Development Unit is now organising individual school sports days for both primary and secondary SEN units.
The sports morning will incorporate a range of track, field and jumping events catering for all ages and abilities. The Disability Sports Development Officer along with highly qualified Manx Sport and Recreation coaches have been providing weekly athletic training sessions to all schools across the Island. These weekly sessions have been facilitated and adapted for a wide range of disabilities in a fun and inclusive environment.
Through ongoing support from Barclays Wealth, the Sports Development Unit will be facilitating two school sports days this year, which will include more than 150 children. Barclays has provided each child with a coloured T-Shirt which they will be wearing on the day to identify which school they represent. Each athlete will be awarded with a medal and certificate for all their achievements.
Stuart Nelson, Head of Community Affairs at Barclays Wealth said: “It is with great pleasure that Barclays has been involved with this initiative. The work the Manx Sport and Recreation team has done is invaluable, and we are delighted to support them. This event is greatly important to us and we even have several members of our staff volunteering at both the School Sports Days.”
Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure, commented: “In partnership with the Department of Education and Children, Athletics is now part of the yearly Disability Sports Programme that is being rolled out with all Primary and Secondary SEN Units. This initiative provides children from all over the Island with the opportunity to get involved in sport and learn key fundamental skills through participating in a fun and inclusive sporting event.”
Both events will be taking place at the National Sports Centre athletics stadium from 10:00am-12:00noon. The secondary school sports day will take place on Monday 20 June and the primary sports day will take place on Wednesday 29 June. Spectators are welcome.
