Get Baking and Support Cakes For Kids Day!

by isleofman.com 21st June 2011
Businesses and schools across the Island are being urged to support Cakes For Kids day on July 15th. The event - which is being promoted by The Children’s Centre as part of Children’s Week - aims to get hundreds of cake bakers of all ages selling their produce at work or at school to raise money for the Centre’s work across the Island. Last year 17 organisations took part in Cake For Kids and raised ?1,500 for The Children’s Centre - the charity’s aim this year is to double that amount. The Children’s Centre will be there to support you every step of the way by providing a fundraising pack which includes poster templates, information you can send to colleagues and recipes. Every organisation who takes part gets a certificate to celebrate their participation and a warm and fuzzy feeling in their tummy because they’ve helped a great local cause. Michelle O’Malley, Fundraising Manager for The Children’s Centre, said: “We’ve always had a huge amount of support from the community for our fundraising and we just hope that people get behind ‘Cakes for Kids’. To get involved you just need some enthusiasm, a sense of fun and a fair bit of buttercream. Baking is a great activity to do with your children or grandchildren so what better way to get involved in Children’s Week.” Children’s Week runs from July 10 to July 16 and there will be around 70 activities, many of which welcome volunteers to organise or help out. For the second year running, the Isle of Man is the only area in the British Isles to celebrate Children’s Week. Activities range from breastfeeding groups, mums and tots events, drama days, adventure sessions, sports, art and much, much more. Grace Phillips is Community Fundraiser at The Children’s Centre and is co-ordinating the charity’s plans for Children’s Week. She said: “We would like to see as many individuals and organisations as possible taking part in Children’s Week - and Cakes For Kids is a simple and fun way to get involved. It’s also great fun for parents and children to bake cakes together. This is just one way to support the week - we would be happy to hear from anyone who wants to organise other fundraising events and activities.” Grace suggested a range of ideas for supporting Children’s Week including a bring a child to work day; a sponsored race or tournament; donating an hour’s wages to a local children’s charity or community group or organizing a beach or street clean or family fun day. If you would like to support Cakes for Kids please email fundraising@thechildrenscentre.org.im or call Michelle on 631919. - ENDS -
