The Island branch of the British Red Cross has received two mobile phones donated by Manx Telecom. The Samsung Solid phones are a ‘rugged’ design which makes them more durable than standard phones. The British Red Cross operates a patient transfer service which takes patients to and from hospital and the phones will be used by ambulance drivers in combination with hands free mobile phone devices.
David Wilson, Island Services Manager for the British Red Cross, said:
“The donation of the mobile phones will be of great benefit to the work that the Isle of Man Branch of the Red Cross undertakes in the community with our ambulances and patient transport services. They will enable us to communicate more effectively within the services and I would like to thank Manx Telecom for their generosity.”
The Island’s British Red Cross volunteers also provide first aid training for children and adults and - once trained - volunteers are on duty at around 300 events on the Island every year. These events range from major motorsport events such as the TT, Manx Grand Prix and Manx Telecom Rally, to volunteers providing first aid cover at entertainment venues such as the Gaiety Theatre.
The Island branch of the British Red Cross - which is affiliated to the UK British Red Cross and supports the charity's international projects - has around 75 volunteers at present but more are welcome.
