On 9th June 2011, the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development held a clean tech networking event, highlighting to companies involved in technology development the benefits of locating clean tech businesses on the Isle of Man - further increasing its presence in the sector. Hosted by Isle of Man Minister for Economic Development, Allan Bell, the event included presentations on future advancements in low carbon vehicle technology, and the benefits of being on the Isle of Man for clean tech business, such as intellectual property rights; trial sites; and a precision manufacturing supply chain. The event was attended by key players in the sector including business development director at Bladon Jets, Courtenay Heading and senior manager, Michael Richardson, from premier car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover who was on the Island for the TT Zero races. Held on the Island since 2009, the TT Zero Clean Emissions Race is the world’s most competitive event for low-carbon motorcycles. Showcasing new technologies, this year nine electric motorbikes started the TT Zero race all eager to prove their credentials on the most renowned road race circuit in the world. This year also saw riders looking to claim the prestigious prize for the first clean emissions bike to achieve a 100 mph average lap speed. The winning Segway MotoCzysz machine recorded a speed of 149.5mph at Sulby and an electric bike record 99.64mph lap. Ken Milne, senior manager for Energy Policy, Department of Economic Development, commented: ‘The TT Zero races have captured the imagination of major corporations, universities and hi-tech institutions across the globe. Holding the event in conjunction with the races allowed us to highlight the growing success of TT Zero, as well as the Isle of Man’s capabilities in the clean tech sector. The event also offered the perfect platform for the Island to demonstrate to businesses why it is an ideal location to trial technology whilst also offering protection to intellectual property generated by businesses. Currently over 100 businesses are active in the Clean Tech sector in the Isle of Man and significant future growth is expected.’ Minister for Economic Development, Allan Bell MHK, commented: ‘The Government has always been keen to embrace new technologies and innovation. The clean tech industry is a market that is growing rapidly, and we are echoing this with our current expansion into the sector.
