As a partner sponsor of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, Barclays Wealth has been busy recruiting staff as volunteers for the event.
The Games, taking place from 7-13 September 2011, will be hosted at various sporting venues around Douglas staging rugby 7’s, boxing, athletics, cycling, gymnastics, swimming and badminton for over 1,000 competitors from around the Commonwealth. To allow the Games to run smoothly up to 1000 volunteers are needed in various roles over the five day festival.
To support this need and boost the number of its own volunteers, recruitment events were held at the three Barclays Wealth offices earlier this month. As a result, over 150 staff members have now signed-up to be volunteers in the run-up to and during the Games.
Lawrence Looney, Head of Global Banking Operations for Barclays Wealth, who has led the co-ordination of its volunteers said: ‘As a partner sponsor of the Games we want to do as much as possible to help the events run smoothly and successfully. With over 800 staff members in the Isle of Man, providing volunteers is one area we can clearly help with. It is fantastic that so many employees have volunteered to give up their time to help with the events. The Commonwealth Youth Games will be a landmark event in our Island’s history and something that we are keen for as many of our staff as possible to be involved with.’
Victoria Karran, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Organising Committee, said: ‘We are delighted that Barclays Wealth has really got behind our recruitment campaign by drumming up over 150 volunteers.. As part of this, we will receive 30 volunteers for each working day of the Games which is a fantastic boost to our numbers. Barclays Wealth has recognised the benefits these Games will have on the Isle of Man community and the great opportunity it provides for Barclays Wealth staff to be involved in the biggest multi-sporting event the island has ever hosted.’
Olympian Kriss Akabusi MBE will be making a special visit to the Island as part of the Barclays Wealth preparation for the Commonwealth Youth Games. On the 12th July Kriss will be visiting primary schools and making an appearance at the Barclays Wealth Victoria Street branch as the excitement builds for the Games in September. More information on Kriss’ visit will be released in the coming days.
