Magpie Choir is a brand new musical project created to rehearse for just a few months before putting on a live performance of specially written arrangements never before performed. The arrangements have been written by Louisa Thomas and creating the choir is the culmination of this work. With the help of Kate Teare and Emma Percival the project is now coming to life as “something like Glee but with less jazz hands, and a little bit Adele by way of Polyphonic Spree”. It’s an ambitious and sometimes bewildering task, but music is a real passion for all three of us.
Potential numbers include Radiohead’s haunting Fade Out; Beth Rowley’s gospel and blues inspired Nobody’s Fault But Mine; covers of Adele, Ellie Goulding, Gnarls Barkley, and Ben Fold’s Five; a mash-up that includes Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent, Michael Buble, Anya Marina and The Pirates of Penzance; an arrangement of Saint-Saen’s sinister Danse Macabre which starts with a storm, has three piano players at one piano and the choir acting as the accompaniment.
We are looking for singers, guitar players, piano players, percussionists, any other kind of musicians and one of the arrangements even has a rhythm section of tap dancers. We’re particularly looking for reliable accompanists for rehearsals and anyone with musical directing or conducting experience. We’re not asking anyone to audition on your own but there will be some fantastic solos for those with a bit more confidence. The final pieces we perform will be chosen depending on the choir itself – how many people we have, what styles suit us best and what everyone’s favourite numbers are.
We’ll be rehearsing between 5.30 and 7pm on Wednesday nights at St Matthews hall, North Quay, Douglas starting on Wednesday 13th July.
