Ballakermeen Artists Brighten Kewaigue School

by isleofman.com 29th June 2011
A large new mural now adorns the front of Kewaigue School, the result of a special project by Ballakermeen High School students and their art teacher, Joanne Kimber. Kewaigue’s old murals had fallen victim to their age and the weather, and so Headteacher Tracy Willoughby approached Ballakermeen for help. The murals were designed and painted by students as part of the secondary school’s enrichment programme. The initial ideas were suggested by Kewaigue pupils and then drawn and painted at Ballakermeen in lunchtime and after-school club sessions. They depict children enjoying a garden, with flowers and butterflies and the school building in the background. The finished boards received many coats of varnish to help them withstand the elements and were then fitted to the front of Kewaigue School by DEC Works Department. The mural decorations face the school’s playing field so pupils are able to enjoy them at playtime as well as when they arrive and depart from school. Headteacher Tracy Willoughby said: ‘We are delighted with the murals. They add a splash of colour and excitement to the front of the school and really add to the positive environment.’/ends Further Information: Paul Kane 648700 p.kane@bhs.sch.im ENDS
