The eagerly-awaited presentations by Professor Brian Cox OBE and members of the Discovery space shuttle crew will be streamed live on the internet from the Villa Marina in Douglas on Wednesday, July 6.
Those who log on via the Wi-Manx website will be able to remotely join the hundreds of Island secondary school students who will be in the audience at the Royal Hall to enjoy the science lesson of a lifetime.
Professor Cox, one of Britain’s leading physicists and the popular presenter of BBC TV programmes such as Wonders of the Universe and Space Hoppers, will be followed on stage by members of the NASA team who crewed the Discovery’s historic final mission.
Thanks to the live streaming being provided by Wi-Manx and Running Media, space enthusiasts and fans of Brian Cox who are not part of a secondary school group can still be part of this unique occasion.
Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK said: ‘The visits of Professor Cox and the NASA astronauts have really captured the public’s imagination and I’m sure many people will take advantage of the live feed to see them in action. Digital inclusion has been a primary focus for the Isle of Man Government in recent years, so I’m delighted we are using technology to provide the public, both in the Island and further afield, with access to this fantastic event.’
Matty Cunningham of Wi-Manx added: ‘We are pleased to be supporting the event at the Villa Marina and hope our live streaming will help to raise the Island’s profile around the world, as well as opening up the presentations to a wider audience.’
People who are not with one of the secondary school groups are asked to take advantage of the internet link as they will not be permitted access to the Royal Hall on the day. Those who wish to view the presentations should log on to http://www.wimanx.com/ and click on the link provided on the home page.
The timetable for the event on Wednesday, July 6, is: 9.30am – 10.30am: presentation by Professor Brian Cox OBE and Q&A session; 10.30am – 11.00am: interval; 11.00am – 12.00pm presentation by NASA astronauts and Q&A session.
The visit of Professor Cox and the NASA astronauts, who are guests at the Tynwald Day ceremony on July 5th, reflects the growing importance of the Isle of Man as a centre of excellence in the space commerce and aerospace engineering sectors.
The NASA trip is being coordinated by ManSat Chairman and CEO Chris Stott, the Isle of Man’s honorary representative to the space community and husband of NASA engineer Nicole Stott.
