Young bookworms are packing their bags for the Family Library’s Summer Reading Scheme, which was launched today.
The 2011 scheme boasts the title Around the World in 72? Days. To complete it, members will read five books over the summer and have their personalised ‘passport’ stamped as they travel from country to country. They will receive a certificate when they reach their final destination.
In a game running alongside it, members will visit Italy, Morocco, Africa, India, Japan, Mexico and Brazil. To pass through each border, children will answer questions about the countries to accrue points.
Members who complete the game could win a fantastic prize sponsored by Thompson Travel of Port Erin, explained Mary Cousins, Librarian-in-Charge.
The Department of Education and Children-run library will also host children’s craft activities linked to the scheme’s theme.
When the scheme ends, all those who complete the challenge will be invited to a carnival party with prizes for children with the best masks and fancy dress.
It’s the fifth year that the Department of Education and Children’s library has created its own reading scheme to keep young members entertained through the school summer holidays.
The Summer Reading Scheme is for members aged five and over but under-fives can enjoy fun and activities via the library’s Junior Reading Club – one of many activities offered at the library in Noble’s Hall, Westmoreland Road – and there will be an safari-themed challenge, with parents and children reading books together and answering questions along the way.
If you don’t belong to the Family Library, it’s not too late to join and take part in the Summer Reading Scheme. Membership costs just ?2 a year for children, who can borrow up to six books, three CDs and one DVD at a time. Their parents can join, too, for ?5 a year, and have the same borrowing entitlement. The library is open from Tuesday to Friday, including during the school summer holidays. For more information, visit http://www.familylibrary.co.uk/Home.html
