Pupils Design Drink Advice Posters

by isleofman.com 4th July 2011
Pupils from St John’s Primary know just what to do if they find an older friend is ill as a result of drinking too much. Year 6 pupils received a lesson on the subject from Orla O’Donoghue, the Department of Education and Children’s Drug and Alcohol Liaison Officer. Orla spoke to the children about staying calm and having the confidence to call 999 for help. During the lesson, the pupils were invited to design posters carrying the same message. Winners Brandon Forrester-McElevey, 10, and Poppy Parkes, 11, are pictured being presented with ?10 Waterstones book tokens by Orla and Nigel Bennett, the school’s Headteacher. ‘The pupils’ posters, with their clear health message, will be used in other primary schools as young people will relate to their art work and messages far better than something produced by adults,’ Orla said. Mr Bennett said: ‘The message regarding what to do and how to help if a friend had got themselves into difficulties through intoxication was well delivered and the posters put together by Year 6 were excellent. Well done to the winners.’ Ends
