The volunteer committee of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games is urging people to send in their application forms to volunteer at September’s Commonwealth Youth Games over the next week, so allocation of roles can begin. Over 600 applications have already been received, a response the Games organisers are delighted with. There are still 200 places left but time is running out for those who want to be part of the largest multi-sporting event ever to be held in the Isle of Man. Applicants of a wide range of ages and abilities are welcome. To help the volunteer committee to plan cover over the whole event, volunteers are asked to be as flexible as possible regarding the role they are allocated and the number of shifts they can do. The volunteer committee is particularly keen to hear from people who are would like to be marshals and stewards, also qualified mini bus drivers or anyone would like the chance to take on the role of Tosha, the Isle of Man Commonwealth Youth Games Mascot. Litter pickers are also in demand, to ensure venues remain looking their best and ensure visitors leave with a good impression of the Isle of Man. Victoria Karran of the volunteer committee said “Put simply, this event could not be held without the generous involvement of volunteers. They will be the face of the Games and critical to their success. This is our chance to share our Islands unique friendliness, beauty and identity with visitors from across the world. Those who volunteer will be part of a real landmark event for the Isle of Man. We know there are people who have been intending to volunteer but have not submitted their form yet. Whilst we don’t want anyone to miss out, very soon we must stop taking entries and move onto the next phase of allocating roles and creating our schedule.” There has been exciting progress in the wider organisation of the Games over the last few weeks, with several celebrity guests now confirmed. Geoff Karran, Chairman and Games Director said “The Organising Committee can reveal that there are a number of celebrities who will be attending the Games. Beth Tweddle, the World Champion Gymnast is going to be present at the Gymnastics events on Sunday the 11th September. Beth won Gold in the first Commonwealth Youth Games in 2000 in Edinburgh. Also attending will be Dame Kelly Holmes, the Double Olympic Gold Medallist, who is the President of the England CGA and Sarah Price an Olympic Swimming competitor for Great Britain.
