Friday Night Street Challenges for Young People

by isleofman.com 7th July 2011
Emergancy services and Department of Education and Children youth workers are teaming up to put on the next urban street sports event on Friday 15th July. The event, which is open to young people aged 11 and over, will be staged at the NSC car park (next to the running track) and will consist of a number of challenges, including some unique and exciting activities provided by the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service. Fire Service Station Officer Nigel Fraser said: ‘We will be using our aerial ladder platform as part of one challenge and water pumps to form water spray curtains as part of another. We will also have a vehicle on display that was involved in a fatal crash to promote safer driving and explain the true effects of a serious road collision. ‘ Jackie Fisher, Youth Worker with the DEC, commented: ‘The latest urban street sports event is action packed with new challenges set to test your ball control and bike riding skills and thanks to our main sponsor of the event, HSBC, we have a good selection of prizes to give away. ‘An element of this event is to enhance the relationships between young people, youth workers and the emergency services and to provide some informal education in relation to issues young people face on the streets.’ Young people are invited to turn up on the night. The event will run from 7pm until 10pm and it’s free to take part. For further information, call the Youth Office on 686057. The event organisers would like to thank HSBC for providing prizes, along with Manx Sport and Recreation for use of the NSC car park and Living Hope Community Church for use of their Youth Bus. Previous urban street sports events have seen free-running inside the old prison, league challenge at Park Road school and muddy football at Pulrose Youth Centre. Ends
