Ramsey Library is getting ready for the school holidays with a summertime circus-themed reading promotion.
Circus Stars, this year's Summer Reading Challenge, is a free scheme aimed at getting children into reading as well as building confidence and learning new skills. Children can sign up for the programme from Monday July 11 at Ramsey Library located in Ramsey Town Hall and the promotion runs throughout the summer until the children go back to school.
They will receive a free pop-out Circus Stars stage set to get them started on their journey and a moving image membership card.
Once part of the Circus Star troupe, young readers will be encouraged to read six or more books of their choice over the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards.
Children can choose any books they want from the library to complete the Circus Stars challenge: story books, information books and audio books all count and as the young readers progress they can collect little rewards – bookmarks, stickers, fridge magnets, a ‘chatterbox’ which predicts what books children will like to read, and yo-yos.
Children can also go to the Circus Stars website - circus-stars.org.uk - where they can create their own avatars and join a crew of circus stars on a journey through games and activities. They can keep track of the books they are reading, send messages to other Circus Stars, and even meet some famous authors.
‘The Summer Reading Challenge is one of the largest creative reading opportunities available to children in the UK. It introduces children to one of the best free resources for their minds that they have on their doorsteps – the local library - and focuses on the development of skills that are vital for their life chances and life skills – reading.’ Alan Yentob, creative director of the BBC.
